In Sydney, Australia, there is a public research institution called The University of Sydney (USYD), usually referred to as Sydney University or just Sydney Uni. To assist UTS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences undergraduate students who are enrolled full-time and continue to do so and who can prove their financial need. A preference may be given to students who are facing additional educational disadvantages.

Eligibility Criteria for Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Undergraduate Student Merit Scholarship
Applicants are advised to meet the following conditions to be eligible for the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Undergraduate Student Merit Scholarship at the University of Sydney:
- A citizen of Australia or New Zealand, or the holder of a permanent humanitarian visa or an Australian permanent resident visa; enrolled in a UTS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences undergraduate program during the session in which the scholarship is given;
- The candidate must have earned a minimum of 48 credit points (or the equivalent) toward their current UTS undergraduate degree at the time of scholarship selection.
- Have demonstrated financial hardship in their application for an Equity Scholarship through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC);
- Every applicant must submit their application using the UTS online Scholarship application form.
Please Note: Previous beneficiaries of this scholarship who received the full amount ($5,000) will not be permitted to apply for it in future rounds of awards. Previous winners who didn’t get the full amount of the scholarship may reapply, but they can only get the maximum amount ($5,000) over any two or more scholarship cycles.
Additional Information
Family Tax Benefits will not be taken into account as evidence of financial hardship when applying for UTS Equity Scholarships through UAC. Only applicants who demonstrate significant financial difficulty with supporting documentation or who are receiving a Centrelink means-tested income assistance payment will be taken into consideration.
You must apply to Centrelink (or make a claim) for the Youth Allowance/Abstudy or any Centrelink benefit that applies to you to be eligible for this scholarship. Once you have given proof of a Centrelink (or other Commonwealth) means-tested income assistance payment (such as Youth Allowance, Austudy, or Abstudy), your application for these Equity Scholarships may still be taken into consideration.
Selection Criteria
Academic prowess
- Students who have received at least a Distinction (WAM of 75+) in their course to date may be given preference.
- Financial hardship as shown by the UAC Equity Scholarship application
- In the scholarship application, you must demonstrate your motivation to excel in your selected undergraduate program in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
- Showed initiative in both their personal and professional lives, as seen by their scholarship application.
Additionally, preference may be granted to students who, according to the UAC Equity Scholarship, have endured any type of long-term educational disadvantage. The following equity standards will be taken into account:
- Long-term medical condition/disability or ongoing effects of abuse
- Indigenous Australian
- Refugee background
- Regional or remote background
- Sole parent responsibilities
- Carer responsibilities
