About the University of Sydney and Scholarship

The University of Sydney, known colloquially as Sydney University or Sydney Uni, stands as a prestigious public research institution situated in Sydney, Australia. Established in 1850, it holds the distinction of being Australia’s oldest university and is one of the nation’s six esteemed sandstone universities. Notably, it was among the pioneering universities worldwide to admit students based solely on their academic merit and, with a commitment to equality, extended the same opportunities to women as it did to men. The university boasts eight academic faculties and university schools, offering an array of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs.

Notably, the university has been affiliated with five Nobel laureates, two Crafoord laureates, eight Australian prime ministers (including the incumbent, Anthony Albanese), two governors-general of Australia, thirteen premiers of New South Wales, 26 justices of the High Court of Australia (including five chief justices), and has produced 110 Rhodes Scholars and 19 Gates Scholars.

The University of Sydney’s academic excellence is widely acknowledged. In the 2021 U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities Rankings, it was positioned 27th globally and secured the second spot in Australia. According to the 2022 Academic Ranking of World Universities published by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, the University of Sydney was ranked 60th globally, placing it among the top 0.6% of the world’s top 1000 universities.

The university has consistently demonstrated its prowess in research, securing the first position in Australia and the 29th position globally in the 2017 CWTS Leiden Rankings for research impact. The 2019 SCImago Institutions Rankings ranked the University of Sydney 33rd globally among universities worldwide. Furthermore, the Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities by National Taiwan University in 2019 positioned the University of Sydney at the 26th spot globally and the second in Australia.
