Fred Z. Eager Research Prize in Veterinary Science at the University of Queensland Australia, 2023

The University of Queensland is accepting applications for its partially funded Fred Z. Eager Research Prize in Veterinary Science.

About the University of Queensland and Scholarship

The State Parliament passed a law in 1909 creating the University of Queensland, the state’s first institution, and on April 16, 1910, the first UQ Senate nominees were officially announced. In 1911, Brisbane’s George Street’s Old Government House welcomed students. In the first year, there were 83 students (60 men and 23 women) divided across the three colleges of arts, science, and engineering.

Following World War I, the University swiftly outgrew its location in the central city due to its rapid development. In 1922, the Medical School was granted access to a second Victoria Park location. During WWII, it served as the Allied Land Forces’ advance headquarters in the South West Pacific. Four years later, Dr. James O’Neil Mayne and his sister Miss Mary Emelia Mayne made financial contributions to purchase the land in St. Lucia that is currently home to the university’s main campus. The first edifice on the St. Lucia site, known as the Forgan Smith building in honor of the premier at the time, was completed in 1939.

In 2015, Nature Index named UQ the research university in the southern hemisphere with the highest volume of research output in both transdisciplinary publications Nature and Science, with around twice as much output as the global average. In terms of sports-related subjects, UQ is first in Australia and second worldwide. In terms of mineral & mining engineering, UQ is second in Australia and third worldwide. Brisbane Diamantina Health Partners, Queensland’s first academic health science system, heavily relies on the University of Queensland. A variety of support and student services are maintained by the University of Queensland.

In honor of the late Fred Z. Eager, Miss Miriam E. Wippell donated $6,000 to establish the Fred Z. Eager Research Prize in Veterinary Science. This award supports postgraduate students pursuing higher degrees of research at The University of Queensland’s School of Veterinary Sciences.
