About Queen Mary University of London and Scholarship

East London’s Mile End is home to the public research institution known as Queen Mary University of London (QMUL, or simply QM; previously Queen Mary and Westfield College). It belongs to the federal University of London family. In the 1880s, the East London College sponsored a charitable project that started teaching at Mile End. In 1915, the College was accepted to the University of London and given the new name Queen Mary College in honor of Mary of Teck. In 1989, the College combined with the University of London institution Westfield College to become Queen Mary and Westfield College.

The School of Medicine and Dentistry (more often referred to as Barts) was created in 1995 when Queen Mary and Westfield College amalgamated with St. Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College and The London Hospital Medical College. Since St. Bartholomew’s was founded in 1123 as a priory and hospital, medical students had been receiving informal education there, although The London Hospital Medical College, England’s first medical school, had been formally training doctors since its founding in 1785. Together, these two venerable organizations make up the original foundations of the current university.

Originally known as Queen Mary and Westfield College, the institution changed its name to Queen Mary University of London in 2000. In 2008, the Privy Council gave Queen Mary the right to confer degrees under its name; before, degrees were conferred by the University of London. The Russell Group of top British research institutions welcomed Queen Mary in 2012. The university’s name was officially changed from Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London to Queen Mary University of London the following year.

Today, Queen Mary has six campuses located in East and Central London: Mile End, Whitechapel, Charterhouse Square, Ilford, Lincoln’s Inn Fields, and West Smithfield. Queen Mary also has a presence abroad in France, China, Greece, and Malta. Of all the campuses in London, the Mile End campus is the biggest independent campus. About 26,000 students attended the institution in 2018–19. The three faculties that makeup Queen Mary are Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

Queen Mary belongs to the Association of Commonwealth Institutions, Universities UK, and the Russell Group of British research institutions. The world’s biggest academic health science center, UCLPartners, includes Queen Mary as one of its key centers for medical education and research. Queen Mary takes over the duties performed by Royal Holloway and manages the programs at the University of London Institute in Paris. The Global MBA program at Queen Mary is also offered in partnership with the University of London.
