The university’s history traces back to 1959 when it was established as a non-denominational institution through the York University Act, which received royal assent in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario on March 26 of that year. Its inaugural class commenced studies in September 1960 at Falconer Hall on the University of Toronto campus, with a total enrollment of 76 students.
In the autumn of 1961, York University relocated to its first campus, Glendon College, which was leased from the University of Toronto. This move marked a shift toward emphasizing liberal arts and part-time adult education. In 1965, the university expanded further by opening a second campus, the Keele Campus, situated in North York, which is now known as York University Heights.

In the 2023/2024 award cycle, approximately 10 exceptional recipients will be granted this scholarship. Each award is valued at $10,000 and is specifically designated to assist with the first year of a Glendon program. Importantly, this scholarship is renewable, which means that recipients can continue to benefit from this financial support for each year of their full-time studies, up to a maximum of 4 years. Eligibility Criteria for Glendon International Excellence Scholarship
Candidates are advised to meet the following conditions to be eligible for the Glendon International Excellence Scholarship at York University:
- Candidates must come from outside. Top academic performers who have been accepted to Glendon (80% or better or equivalent)
- Candidates must exhibit a high degree of leadership abilities via volunteer work, superior performance in athletics or the arts, or both.
- A high school teacher or guidance counselor’s letter of reference, a comprehensive application, and a 300-word statement outlining the applicant’s leadership qualities and the impact they will make to Glendon will all be required for consideration.
- Recipients must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 8.0 over a minimum of 24 credits taken during a school year, which includes the previous summer semester, autumn semester, and winter semester, for this award to be renewed.
