About the University of Dundee
A public research university with its headquarters in Dundee, Scotland, is the University of Dundee. With a gift from the well-known Baxter family of textile manufacturers, it was established in 1881 as a university institution. The organization, along with United College and St. Mary’s College, which are all located in the town of St. Andrews itself, served as a constituent college of the University of St. Andrews throughout the majority of its early years. The University of Dundee saw a major development before receiving a royal charter in 1967 that granted it autonomous university status while preserving some of its old traditions and governing system.
The Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, the Dundee Law School, and the Dundee Dental Hospital and School are all part of the university’s main campus, which is in Dundee’s West End. The university also maintains buildings at Kirkcaldy, Fife, where a portion of its School of Nursing and health sciences is located, Ninewells Hospital, where it has a clinical research center, and Perth Royal Infirmary, where it has a School of Medicine. The institution’s annual revenue for 2021–2022 was £291.5 million, with £71.8 million coming from grants and contracts for research and £344.8 million coming from outlays.
The University of Dundee was founded on the foundations of the University of St. Andrews and an older university institution in Dundee. The desire for the formation of a university in Dundee greatly expanded throughout the 19th century due to the city’s expanding population. Several organizations, like the city’s University Club, were founded to support this cause. There was a considerable effort to build a college quite similar to the current United College or to relocate the entire university to Dundee (which the royal committee noted was now a “large and increasing town”). At long last, it was decided that St. Andrews needed to expand its science and professional programs rather than its artistic ones.
As of 2018, Dundee is listed in the top 300 universities in the world by the major international rankings (ARWU, QS, Times, and CWTS Leiden); it is placed 42nd in the CWTS Leiden Ranking, equal to 272nd in the QS World University Rankings, and 201–300th in the Academic Ranking of World Universities.
