About the University of Liverpool and Scholarship

Established in 1881 as University College Liverpool, the institution welcomed its inaugural students in 1882 before becoming a constituent of the federal Victoria University in 1884. The University of Liverpool, as it came to be known, achieved independence in 1903 following a royal charter and an act of Parliament, gaining the authority to confer its degrees. Throughout its rich history, the university has been a hotbed of groundbreaking discoveries and contributions across various disciplines.

Notable milestones include Professor Oliver Lodge’s pioneering public radio transmission in 1894 and the first surgical X-ray in the United Kingdom two years later. The establishment of the Liverpool University Press in 1899 further underscored the university’s commitment to scholarly publishing, making it the third-oldest university press in England. William Blair-Bell’s innovations in chemotherapy for cancer treatment and Sir Charles Sherrington’s discovery of the synapse both marked major advances in the early 20th century.

Historical events involving the University of Liverpool include the contributions of Sir James Chadwick and Sir Joseph Rotblat to the creation of the atomic bomb in the 1930s and 1940s. A major contributor to the mid-1900s smallpox eradication campaign, which ran from 1943 to 1966, was Professor Allan Downie.

The university has remained one of the leading centers for research in the modern era. The institution joined the N8 Group in 2004 after being a founding member of the prestigious Russell Group in 1994. Twenty-first-century construction of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN was made possible in large part by the efforts of the University of Liverpool’s scientists, engineers, and technicians.

Publications like The Independent and The Sunday Times have acknowledged the institution’s intellectual competence and recent rankings have backed this up. The University of Liverpool came in at number 31 in the 2013 Complete University Guide, which rated 124 universities worldwide.
