About the University of Queensland and Scholarship

The University of Queensland (UQ) is a public research university largely based in Brisbane, the capital city of the Australian state of Queensland. The oldest institution in the state, UQ was established in 1909 by the Queensland government and is one of the six sandstone universities. In addition, UQ is a founding member of the global Association of Pacific Rim Universities, the top Group of Eight in Australia, and edX.

Six faculties of the university provide associate, bachelor, master, doctoral, and further doctorate degrees. The institution also includes a college and a graduate school. Molecular Bioscience Institute, Boeing Research and Technology Australia Centre, Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology, and UQ Dow Centre for Sustainable Engineering Innovation are just a few of the more than a hundred research institutions and centers located at UQ. The university’s recent important research includes the discovery of the HPV vaccination, which prevents cervical cancer, the development of a COVID-19 vaccine in human trials, and the development of high-performance superconducting MRI magnets for portable scanning of human limbs.

The university is renowned in several engineering fields. It is ranked third globally in the field of mining and minerals engineering, 76–100th globally in the field of chemical engineering, 76–100th globally in the field of civil engineering, 101–150th globally in the field of material science and engineering, and 101–150th globally in the field of electrical and electronic engineering.

UQ was placed in the top 50 in the world in 20 subjects in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021. For Sports-Related Subjects, UQ is first in Australia and second in the world, while for Mineral & Mining Engineering, UQ is second in Australia and third in the world.

The Joan Cribb OAM Science Scholarship was founded in 2023 by Alumni Friends to assist students in the Faculty of Science who are encountering financial difficulties. This scholarship is an endowment funded by The Queensland Commitment Fund.

Eligibility Criteria for Joan Cribb OAM Science Scholarship

Candidates are advised to meet the following prerequisites to be eligible for the Joan Cribb OAM Science Scholarship at the University of Queensland:

  • are enrolled in, or plan to enroll in, a program approved by the Faculty of Science
  • can demonstrate financial necessity.

Selection Criteria

The institution will consider:

  • Proven need for money
  • The quality of the personal statement
  • Scholastic competence as evidenced by overall academic success in high school or postsecondary education to date
  • More information that the selection committee could think is pertinent to your potential achievement in their sector.
  • Preference shall be given to qualified students who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people where all other factors are equal.
