About City University London and Scholarship

City began with the Northampton Institute and the City Law School, which first welcomed students in 1852. The institute was built on land in Islington between Northampton Square and St. John Street, which was donated by the Marquess of Northampton, and was given that name. The institution was established to meet the community’s needs for welfare and education. Aiming to “promote the industrial skill, general knowledge, health, and well-being of young men and women belonging to the poorer classes,” it was created by the City of London Parochial Charities Act (1883).

The Northampton Polytechnic Institute opened its doors in Clerkenwell, London, in 1894. The initial headmaster of the school was Robert Mullineux Walmsley. The gymnastics club at Northampton Polytechnic Institute was home to 1920 British Champion Arthur George Cocksedge, a British gymnast who competed in the Summer Olympics. he Northampton Polytechnic ABC’s Maurice Dennis won the 1937 ABA Middleweight Championship. Frederick Handley Page was the institute’s aeronautics teacher. The Handley Page Type A, his first powered aircraft, was transformed into an instructional airframe for the college. Author of novels Eric Ambler went to school there to study engineering.

In April 2001, the institution and Queen Mary University of London forged a strategic partnership. The fourth-floor offices and roof were destroyed by a fire at the college building in May 2001. The Inns of Court School of Law and City decided to join in August 2001. A multimillion-dollar facility for the Business School was constructed at 106 Bunhill Row as a result of a contribution from the Sir John Cass’s Foundation.

The School of Arts building had a £10 million renovation in 2007. In October 2008, a brand-new students’ union location dubbed “TEN squared” opened its doors. This space serves as a hub for students to socialize throughout the day and organizes a variety of evening entertainment, including club nights, society events, and quiz nights. City improved from seventh position in the 2016 league to joint fifth place among the 168 institutions polled in the 2019 People & Planet league table of the most sustainable UK universities. It was the top-ranked University of London institution in both the 2016 and 2019 rankings and one of just four London schools to make the top twenty.
