About Lincoln University and Scholarship
When Lincoln College, Canterbury was granted independence from the University of Canterbury in 1990, Lincoln University (Mori: Te Whare Wnaka o Aoraki) was established as a New Zealand institution of higher learning. It was founded in 1878 and is the oldest agricultural training center in the Southern Hemisphere. It remains the smallest (by enrolment) and one of the eight public universities in New Zealand. In Lincoln, Canterbury, 15 km (9 km) outside of Christchurch, the campus is set on 50 hectares (120 acres) of land.
In 2018, Lincoln University had 633 full-time equivalent staff members and 2695 equivalent full-time students (188 academic, 135 administrative and support, 65 technical, and 273 farm and operational). The Euroleague for Life Sciences includes Lincoln University.
The School of Agriculture at Canterbury University College served as the precursor to Lincoln University from 1878 until its July 1880 establishment. All courses were held in the main building (later known as Ivey Hall), which had 56 students by 1885, with 32 of them living there. William Ivey, the school’s principal, who taught agriculture, George Gray, a chemist and physicist who stayed on staff until 1915, Eric Manley Clarke, a mathematician and surveyor who is descended from the English geodetic Alexander Ross Clarke, and Thomas Hill, a part-time lecturer in veterinary science, made up the teaching staff.
The quality of Lincoln University’s research was placed sixth in 2003 during the inaugural Performance Based Research Fund rating exercise, which is comparable to the UK’s Research Assessment Exercise. Additionally, the financing for research there had the biggest percentage growth.
According to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings for 2017–18, Lincoln is ranked 319 overall. Lincoln is rated QS Five Stars as well. Agriculture and forestry (39th) and hospitality and leisure management (48th) both place Lincoln among the top 50. According to the 2017 Times Higher Education (THE) international university rankings, Lincoln is rated between 401 and 500th.

Eligibility Criteria for Lincoln University Doctoral Scholarships
Applicants are advised to meet the following conditions to be eligible for the Lincoln University Doctoral Scholarships:
- being a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand
- Every International Student
- Candidates must be brand-new to the Lincoln University Doctoral program at the start of the semester that follows the award OR they must have registered for the program no more than six months before the application deadline.
- Additionally, candidates are urged to start the application process for Lincoln University’s doctoral program. This must be completed before October 1 to be eligible for the scholarship.
Note: For international applicants, you must have either obtained a conditional offer of admission to Lincoln University this year or must have enrolled in the university’s doctoral program after March 31, 2023.
Selection Criteria
- Academic achievement. To be eligible to apply for the scholarship, a student must have a grade point average of at least A- (80%).
- Research or other related expertise.
