The University of East Anglia (UEA) is a distinguished public research institution situated in Norwich, England. It was founded in 1963 and occupies an expansive 320-acre (130-hectare) campus located to the west of the city center. UEA comprises four faculties and boasts a remarkable twenty-six schools of study. Every student at UEA is automatically enrolled as a member of the university’s union, with the option to opt out of membership if they choose. Union membership grants students the privilege of participating in various activities, including clubs and societies, as well as engaging in the union’s democratic processes. The union operates as a democratic organization, led by its members through an elected student officer committee and student council. It maintains an affiliation with the National Union of Students (NUS).
The Mansion House Scholarship Scheme (MHSS) is a notable initiative that grants scholarships to students and early-career business executives. The recipients are provided with funding to pursue studies, training, or work experience in the financial services sector within the United Kingdom.
This scheme was established during the mayoralty of Sir Richard Nichols in 1997/98. Sir Richard held the distinction of being the first Lord Mayor of the City of London to serve as the Patron of the Scheme for the entire duration of his mayoral term. He awarded the initial two scholarships to Mansion House Scholars hailing from Vietnam and Thailand, following official visits to both countries. The Scheme was formally registered with the Charity Commission in 2001. Since its inception, the MHSS has granted a total of 208 scholarships to applicants from 70 countries, with 35 of these countries classified as “developing” by the OECD.
