About Newcastle University and Scholarship
Newcastle University, officially known as the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, stands as a distinguished public research institution situated in the vibrant city of Newcastle upon Tyne, North East England. Boasting a rich history and a commitment to academic excellence, the university has firmly established itself as a red-brick university and proudly holds membership in the prestigious Russell Group—an association of leading research-intensive universities in the United Kingdom.
The university’s origins trace back to the School of Medicine and Surgery, founded in 1834, and the College of Physical Science, established in 1871 and later renamed Armstrong College. These institutions, along with the Durham Colleges, eventually became part of the federal University of Durham. In a significant milestone in 1937, the Newcastle colleges merged to form King’s College. Subsequently, in 1963, through an Act of Parliament, King’s College transformed into the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Newcastle University is recognized for its commitment to research and innovation, with overseas campuses extending its global reach to Singapore and Malaysia. The academic structure of the university is organized into three faculties, each contributing to a diverse and comprehensive academic landscape. These faculties are the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Medical Sciences, and the Faculty of Science, Agriculture, and Engineering.
In a forward-looking initiative, Newcastle University introduces the Alumni Progression Scholarship and Alumni Progression Discount schemes, set to be available from the 2024 academic year onwards. These schemes offer distinct pathways, providing valuable opportunities for alumni to further their education and contribute to their academic and professional growth.
- a £1,000 Alumni Progression Scholarship (not available to students obtaining the 20% Alumni Progression Discount) is offered to qualifying alumni of Newcastle University in the UK and abroad.
- qualified UK Newcastle University alumni from underrepresented backgrounds can receive a 20% Alumni Progression Discount*.
The following eligibility requirements apply to both the Alumni Progression Discount and the Alumni Progression Scholarship programs.
This program takes the role of the 20% Alumni Discount program. * Graduates who took part in the PARTNERS, Realizing Opportunities, Sutton Trust, or Contextual Offer programs before starting their undergraduate degree are eligible for this program.
