About Newcastle University and Scholarship

Newcastle University, legally known as the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, is a prominent public research institution situated in Newcastle upon Tyne, North East England. In addition to its main campus, it boasts overseas campuses in Singapore and Malaysia. This university is recognized as a “red brick” institution and is an esteemed member of the Russell Group, an association of research-intensive universities in the United Kingdom.

The university’s history can be traced back to the establishment of the School of Medicine and Surgery in 1834 and the founding of the College of Physical Science (later renamed Armstrong College) in 1871. These two educational entities eventually became part of the federal University of Durham, with the Durham Colleges forming the counterpart. In 1937, the Newcastle colleges merged to create King’s College. Subsequently, in 1963, King’s College was granted university status through an Act of Parliament and became the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Newcastle University is organized into three faculties: the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Medical Sciences, and the Faculty of Science, Agriculture, and Engineering. The university offers an extensive array of approximately 175 full-time undergraduate degree programs, encompassing various fields such as arts, sciences, engineering, and medicine. Additionally, it provides around 340 postgraduate taught and research programs spanning diverse disciplines.

The institution reported an annual income of £543.2 million for the 2021–22 academic year, with £109.6 million attributed to research grants and contracts. Its total expenditure amounted to £624.3 million.

The campus is conveniently located near Haymarket in central Newcastle upon Tyne, situated to the northwest of the city center and bordered by the green spaces of Leazes Park and the Town Moor. Notably, the university’s medical school and the Royal Victoria Infirmary are adjacent to the western side of the campus.

Newcastle University is an esteemed member of the Russell Group, a prestigious association of research-intensive universities in the UK. It consistently achieves high rankings in various international and national evaluations. In 2023, it was ranked 110th globally by QS, 292nd by Leiden, 139th by Times Higher Education, and 201st–300th by the Academic Ranking of World Universities. On a national level, it was placed joint 33rd by the Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide, 30th by the Complete University Guide, and joint 63rd by the Guardian.

The university is committed to nurturing and empowering MBA candidates who have the potential to shape an organization’s future. To support this endeavor, it offers the Developing Talent and Leadership Scholarship, designed to recognize MBA candidates who are results-driven, customer-centric, and capable of demonstrating strong leadership qualities and values.
