The university’s history can be traced back to the establishment of the School of Medicine and Surgery in 1834 and the founding of the College of Physical Science (later renamed Armstrong College) in 1871. These two educational entities eventually became part of the federal University of Durham, with the Durham Colleges forming the counterpart. In 1937, the Newcastle colleges merged to create King’s College. Subsequently, in 1963, King’s College was granted university status through an Act of Parliament and became the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.
