University of Nottingham Nova Centurion Sports Scholarship – Swimming and Para-swimming, UK 2023/2024

Application is now open for the Nova Centurion Sports Scholarship – Swimming and Para Swimming at the University of Nottingham. Interested candidates are encouraged to send in their applications before the deadline date.

About the University of Nottingham and Scholarship

The University of Nottingham may trace its beginnings to the establishment of an adult education school in 1798 as well as the University Extension Lectures, the nation’s first of their type, which were launched by the University of Cambridge in 1873. However, it is usually accepted that University College Nottingham, which was founded in 1881 as a college preparing students for exams given by the University of London, served as the university’s founding institution.

The Adult Education School and Cambridge Extension Lectures were established permanently in 1875 thanks to a donation of £10,000 from an unidentified donor, and the Corporation of Nottingham agreed to build and maintain a facility for this use as well as contribute money to pay for the teaching. Former British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone properly set the college’s foundation stone in 1877, and Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany officially opened the college’s neo-gothic edifice on Shakespeare Street in 1881.

Four professors taught literature, physics, chemistry, and natural science in 1881. The creation of new departments and chairs was swift: in 1884, engineering; in 1893, classics and philosophy; in 1897, education; in 1905, the combined departments of physics and mathematics; in 1911, the departments of English and mining; in 1912, economics; in 1912, geology combined with geography; in 1914, history; in 1923, adult education; and 1925, pharmacy.

The institution won the titles of Times Higher Education “University of the Year” in 2006, “Entrepreneurial University of the Year” in 2008, and “University of the Year” runner-up in 2010 for the Sunday Times. The Sunday Times awarded Nottingham the “University of the Year” for graduate employment in 2016–17. The Fulbright Commission refers to Nottingham as “one of the oldest, largest, and most prestigious universities in the UK.” SCImago Institutions Rankings placed it 126th out of all universities in the globe in 2019.

Nottingham is ranked seventh for research power (the grade point average of a university multiplied by the full-time equivalent number of researchers submitted) and joint 25th for GPA in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), which evaluates the quality of research in UK higher education institutions. Nottingham University was ranked 139th overall and 10th in the United Kingdom by the 2016 CWUR University Ranking.
