About Flinders University and Scholarship

Flinders University, a prominent public research institution based in Adelaide, South Australia, has been a key player in higher education since its establishment in 1966.

Nyrstar, a global multi-metals enterprise, holds a market-leading position in zinc and lead, with expanding interests in other bases and precious metals. The Nyrstar Port Pirie facility stands as the world’s largest single-stream primary lead smelter, producing refined commodity-grade lead and lead alloys, zinc oxide fume, copper cathode, silver and gold, sulfuric acid, and various byproduct metals.

The two-year scholarship offered by the Playford Trust in collaboration with Nyrstar presents a valuable opportunity for the scholarship recipient. The paid work placement is designed to encourage skill development and increased industry involvement. Scholars will engage in a series of technical projects aimed at addressing real-world challenges, applying their university-acquired knowledge in an industrial setting. Working closely with senior plant metallurgists or senior engineers, they will thoroughly understand and identify problems, conduct analyses, and develop and implement effective solutions.

Thanks to the generous support from Nyrstar, the Playford Trust extends up to four two-year scholarships to students entering their third year of chemical, mechanical, or electrical engineering at one of South Australia’s three public universities.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to initiate the application process promptly. Starting early allows the Trust to submit names to Nyrstar promptly, streamlining the application and selection process. Additionally, successful scholarship recipients may be offered placement in the company’s graduate program at Port Pirie upon completion of their scholarship and studies. This further underscores the valuable connection between academic pursuits and industry engagement facilitated by the scholarship.
