The Clemson University Coastal Research and Education Center (CREC) is actively involved in applied research, education, and public service programs focused on vegetable and specialty crops. One notable opportunity at CREC is the availability of Ph.D. positions in Vegetable Postharvest Graduate Research Assistant at the Department of Food, Nutrition, and Packaging Sciences.
The Coastal Research and Education Center dedicates its efforts to advancing production and handling technology for the vegetable industry. Extension activities play a vital role in disseminating research findings, with a strong emphasis on local problem-solving and grower educational programs.
Within the PhD program at Clemson University’s Food, Nutrition, and Packaging Sciences department, students can explore opportunities at the CREC. The focus of the research includes postharvest activities related to intact or fresh-cut fruits and vegetables. Students have the flexibility to choose their dissertation project from ongoing research within the postharvest program at CREC.
Responsibilities for the graduate student(s) in this program involve designing and conducting postharvest trials, evaluating quality parameters, performing biochemical and molecular assays, engaging in laboratory, greenhouse, and/or fieldwork, and analyzing and interpreting results. Additionally, candidates are expected to publish their research findings and present them at national or international meetings. As part of the Food, Nutrition, and Packaging Sciences graduate program, the Ph.D. candidate will contribute to advancing knowledge in the field and gaining valuable research experience.

Eligibility Criteria for PhD Positions at the Clemson University Coastal Research and Education Center
Applicants are advised to meet the following requirements to be qualified for PhD Positions at the Clemson University Coastal Research and Education Center:
- A master’s degree in horticulture, plant sciences, food science, plant biology, or a similar discipline.
- Experience conducting laboratory research will be given preference.
- Potential pupils ought to be very interested in:
1) fruit/vegetable quality and shelf-life, and
2) conventional and biotechnological approaches for reducing produce losses and waste.
- The ideal candidate will be proactive, have outstanding oral and written communication skills, and be able to work both alone and collaboratively. Strong analytical abilities are necessary.
- The candidate should be detail-oriented, have strong time management abilities, and pick things up quickly.
