About Cornell University and Scholarship
Ithaca, New York-based Cornell University is a private, Ivy League research institution. Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White established the institution in 1865. Cornell has always been a co-educational, non-sectarian college, and admittance has never been based on race or religion. More than 15,000 undergraduate and 7,000 graduate students representing 130 nations and all 50 American states made up the student body for the fall 2022 semester.

Scholars and artists whose works address the 2024–25 subject of Silence are invited to submit applications for residential scholarships by the Society for the Humanities at Cornell University. There might be as many as six colleagues hired. The fellowships last for a full calendar year, from August to July. Each Society Fellow shall be awarded $60,000 in total.
Scholars and professionals from other universities as well as Cornell faculty members relieved from their usual responsibilities are considered fellows. Fellows at the Society for the Humanities are “residential,” working with Paul Fleming, professor of comparative literature and German studies, who serves as the Society’s Taylor Family Director, as well as other fellows.
During the residential fellowship, fellows spend their time reading, writing, and conducting research. They are also obliged to attend a weekly fellows seminar where they workshop one other’s projects and engage in spirited debates about the texts chosen to correspond with the annual subject.
The fellowship year has a social and community feel to it; fellows build relationships outside of the classroom and the lecture hall by dining together after each weekly seminar and by going to post-lecture receptions and other informal activities all year long. Fellows are required to routinely visit their offices on campus while they reside and work in Ithaca, New York.
All candidates for Society Fellowships should share this dedication to building a caring and dynamic community. During their year of fellowship, fellows conduct one short seminar suitable for graduate students and upper-level undergraduates. There are no further limitations on what or how the course should be taught, even though courses are created to meet the primary theme. Fellows are encouraged to try new things with their seminar’s topic and delivery, especially if it links to their ongoing research.

Eligibility for Residential Society Fellowships for International Researchers
Fellows should be working on projects that are connected to the Silence subject for 2024–25. They should take a broad enough view of the humanities to engage both academics and students from other humanistic fields. Candidates must have earned their Ph.D. before January 1, 2023. Scholars with doctorates obtained after this date are not eligible to apply to the Society for the Humanities. Additionally, candidates must have one or more years of teaching experience, which may include tutoring undergrads. Any international scholars who qualify for a visa are invited to apply.
Application Process for Residential Society Fellowships for International Researchers
The following materials must be applied for via AJO job #24897 by September 20, 2023, at the latest. Other application methods won’t be taken into consideration.
- CV (curriculum vitae)
- A 300-word maximum one-page abstract outlining the research endeavor the candidate hopes to carry out while receiving the fellowship
- A lengthy (1,000–2,000 word) summary of the research endeavor. A one-page bibliography of the project’s most important sources may also be included by applicants.
- An outline of a seminar course that addresses the applicant’s research. Only fifteen advanced undergraduate and graduate students may participate in a seminar, which meets twice a week for one semester. The course proposal ought to include:
- (50–125 words) A succinct course description appropriate for the university course catalog
- A thorough proposal for the course (maximum 300 words)
- the course’s mandatory reading list
- One academic paper, no longer than 35 pages.
- Candidates should email both their research proposal and their teaching proposal to two senior peers in your area (from any university). Evaluations of the candidate’s anticipated research and teaching statements have to be included in letters of reference. Referees should send their letters immediately through the application link, if possible. Letters must be received by September 20, 2023, or earlier.
