About the University of Technology Sydney at Scholarship

UTS is a public university of technology that distinguishes itself by promoting the social, cultural, and economic well-being of its local communities. They are dedicated to research, innovation, and the transmission of information of public importance and are judged on the performance of their students, staff, and partners. They have always been and always will be an inclusive institution.

The campus life at UTS is culturally varied, and its active international exchange, study, and research programs equip its graduates for both the present and future workplaces. Alongside Sydney’s core business area, its campus is located in the city’s creative and digital zone. The continuous transformation of the UTS campus will guarantee that they continue to construct and maintain a purpose- and sustainably-built campus to foster innovation in education and research, continuing a 10-year era of substantial development.

Outstanding candidates with training in biomedical science, microbiology, or a related field are encouraged to apply for a fully funded Ph.D. scholarship at the University of Technology Sydney’s Centre for Inflammation to study the role of the gut-lung axis in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) under Prof. Phil Hansbro.

Throughout their Ph.D. program, candidates will study the pathology of COPD and how the microbiome may contribute to the onset of this common and severe lung disease. They will also learn and put into practice a variety of critical techniques from biology, microbiology, and molecular science (particularly multi-omics approaches). This project’s ultimate goal is to clarify the function of the gut-lung axis in COPD and evaluate cutting-edge therapeutics for the condition that includes modifying the gut-lung axis.

Additional Information

Effective therapies are desperately needed since lung illnesses and COPD are such serious clinical problems. Although local and systemic inflammation are the main causes, the lung is the main area of study. The stomach and lungs interact with one another in both an infectious and immunological way. Asthma and COPD are both associated with gut disorders that cause inflammation in the lungs and vice versa. The potential for novel strategies that control gut metabolites and microbiomes to treat lung illnesses is great. This project will combine their expertise to further their ground-breaking research on the gut-lung axis (GLA), which aims to therapeutically alter gut immunity and microbiomes to treat COPD.

Selection Procedure
