About Flinders University and Scholarship

Located in Adelaide, South Australia, Flinders University is a public research university with a presence in 11 other cities around the state as well as the Northern Territory. It was established in 1966 and is named after British sailor Matthew Flinders, who in the early 19th century explored and mapped the coastlines of Australia and South Australia.

On March 25, 1966, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, officially inaugurated Flinders University. The first Vice-Chancellor was Peter Karmel, and the first Chancellor was Sir Mark Mitchell. The institution started offering classes on March 7th, 1966, with 400 enrolled students.

It is a lush institution, with 156 acres of native bushland and gardens around its main campus in Bedford Park in Adelaide’s south. Tonsley, Adelaide’s CBD, Renmark, Alice Springs, and Darwin are among the other campuses. This institution belongs to the Innovative Research Universities (IRU) Group. According to the Australian Government’s Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching’s 2021 Graduate Outcome Survey – Longitudinal, Flinders University tops the country for postgraduate employment outcomes.

More than 160 undergraduate and graduate programs are available at Flinders University, along with higher degree research supervision in all fields of study. To complement in-person instruction and offer flexible alternatives, many courses make use of emerging information and communication technology. Since its founding in 1966, eight Vice Chancellors and six Chancellors have served Flinders University.

The Flinders University Student Access Scholarships were established by the university to offer financial assistance to students from low socioeconomic backgrounds who are beginning their first year of undergraduate study at Flinders University and have not yet finished any previous university studies at any other tertiary institution. For the first year of study at Flinders University, scholarships of $2,500 will be offered, pending funding availability.
