About Texas A&M University and Scholarships

Texas A&M University is a public, research institution in College Station, Texas, that offers land grants. It was established in 1876, and in 1948 it was named the system’s flagship university. The only university in Texas to have simultaneous titles as a land-, sea-, and space-grant institution is Texas A&M, which has the biggest student body in the US as of 2021. It belongs to the group of institutions known as “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity” and is affiliated with the Association of American Universities.

Under the terms of the 1862 Morrill Land-Grant Act, the university was the first public institution of higher learning to be established in Texas. It began offering classes on October 4, 1876, under the name Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas (A.M.C.).

The institution expanded during the next decades, reaching its highest enrollment level during World War II before experiencing its first post-war severe enrolment standstill. Under the direction of President James Earl Rudder, who oversaw the college’s desegregation, coeducation, and elimination of the Corps of Cadets requirement, enrollment increased once again in the 1960s. The Texas Legislature renamed the college Texas A&M University in 1963 to reflect the institution’s expanded functions and academic offerings; the letters “A&M” were kept as a memorial to the university’s previous name.

The Center for World-Class Universities ranked Texas A&M 57th nationally and 151st globally in its 2021 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) rankings after comparing the effectiveness of its professors, the caliber of its education, and the productivity of its research. Texas A&M was ranked 193rd globally and 61st among North American colleges in the 2021–2022 The Times Higher Education Supplement rankings.

The university came in at 168 in the world according to the 2021–2022 QS World University Rankings. Texas A&M was ranked as the 74th-best institution worldwide and the 41st-best university in the United States in the 2022 edition of the Center for World Institution Rankings. Texas A&M was ranked 68th nationally and 130th overall in the 2022 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s list of top institutions.
