About the University of Queensland and Scholarship
The University of Queensland (UQ, or Queensland University) was established in 1902 and is an Australian public research university with its main campus in Brisbane, the state capital of Queensland. The Queensland government established UQ in 1909, making it one of the six “sandstone universities,” or the oldest institutions of higher learning in each state. According to the aggregate rankings of the three most prominent international universities, the University of Queensland is ranked second in Australia and 42nd globally in 2023.
A global organization with a concentration on top-notch research, the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, and the top Group of Eight in Australia, edX, both include UQ as a founding member. The main St. Lucia campus occupies the majority of St. Lucia’s inner riverside suburb, which is located southwest of Brisbane’s central business district. The Mayne Medical School and the Gatton campus are only two of the locations and facilities that UQ has located around Queensland, with the latter being the biggest. Along with the UQ North America headquarters in Washington, D.C., the UQ-Ochsner Clinical School in Louisiana, United States, is one of UQ’s worldwide sites.
In science, health, and technology, Queensland has a significant research presence. The invention of the cervical cancer vaccinations Gardasil and Cervarix by UQ Professor Ian Frazer was a major step forward in the university’s research. According to a 2009 assessment from the Australian Cancer Research Foundation, UQ has become a global leader in several cancer research fields.
More UQ researchers are engaged in research fields that ERA has rated as above world standard than at any other Australian university (22 broad fields), according to the Commonwealth Government’s Excellence in Research for Australia 2012 National Report. UQ research in the fields of biomedical and clinical health sciences, technology, engineering, biological, chemical, environmental, and physical sciences was rated as being superior to that of the rest of the world (rating 5).
With over twice as much production as the worldwide average, UQ was recognized by Nature Index as the research university in the southern hemisphere in 2015 with the largest volume of research output in the multidisciplinary journals Nature and Science. The institution is also well-regarded in several engineering fields. It is rated third in the world for mining and minerals engineering, 76-100th for chemical engineering, 76-100th for civil engineering, 101-150th for material science and engineering, and 101-150th for electrical and electronic engineering.
The institution was created in 1961 as per the terms of Miss Monica Francis McIntyre’s bequest, who passed away in 1956. It was created in honor of her father Thomas McIntyre, a former State School Head Teacher who later became an Inspector of Schools. The goal is to promote medical research, particularly research on TB.
