About Toronto Metropolitan University
In Toronto, Ontario, Canada, there is a public research university called Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU or Toronto Met). Despite having buildings located around Toronto, the university’s main campus is located in the Garden District. The university has seven academic departments or faculties: the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Community Services, the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science, the Faculty of Science, The Creative School, the Lincoln Alexander School of Law, and the Ted Rogers School of Management. These faculties are frequently further divided up into more manageable departments and schools. The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education is another service offered by the institution.
The organization was founded in 1948 under the name Ryerson Institute of Technology, after Egerton Ryerson, a significant figure in the development of Canada West’s public school and teacher’s college systems. Under new provincial regulations, the organization was renamed Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in 1964. In the 1970s, the organization received a restricted license to award degrees under that name. In 1993, the organization underwent a comprehensive reorganization, changing its name to Ryerson Polytechnic University. The institution changed its name to Ryerson Institution in 2002, several years after its graduate school had been created. Due to worries over Egerton Ryerson’s impact on the Canadian Indian residential school system, the university was renamed Toronto Metropolitan University in 2022.
During the 2019–20 academic year, the university will enroll about 44,400 undergraduate students and 2,950 graduate students. There were around 170,000 alumni of TMU as of 2017. The university’s sports department runs several varsity teams that compete in the Ontario University Athletics Conference of U Sports under the moniker TMU Bold.
