About the University of Stirling

The University of Stirling was established by royal charter in 1967 and is a public university in Stirling, Scotland (Scots: University o Stirlin; Scottish Gaelic: Oilthigh Shruighlea; shortened as Stir or Shruiglea in post-nominals). It was constructed inside the walled grounds of Airthrey Castle and is situated in Scotland’s Central Belt.

The Stirling University Innovation Park and the Dementia Center are both located on the university campus, which spans around 360 acres (1.5 km2) in total. The campus is situated in the Ochil Hills’ foothills. The International Council on Monuments and Monuments named the University of Stirling and the landscape of the Airthrey Estate as two of the top 20 20th-century historic monuments in the UK in 2002.

14,000 full- and part-time students were enrolled in the university as of 2022. In China with Hebei Normal University, Singapore with Singapore Institute of Management, and Oman, Stirling has collaborations for its foreign degree programs. The only Human Rights and Diplomacy program taught in collaboration with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) is offered by the institution and is an MSc in Human Rights and Diplomacy.

After nearly 400 years, Scotland finally got a brand-new university when Stirling was founded. The initial campus location was chosen from a shortlist of potential locations, which also included Falkirk, Perth, and Inverness. Lord Robbins, the Robbins Review’s author who advocated for an increase in the number of universities in the UK in the 1960s, was chosen as the institution’s first chancellor in 1968. The home for university president Tom Cottrell was finished in 1967 and was created by architects Morris and Steedman. In 2009, it was classified as category A.

Before 1992, Stirling was a mid-ranked UK university known for its excellent instruction and socially significant research. According to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, it is ranked second in the UK and 46th overall. The Complete University Guide lists it among the top 40 universities in the UK. It is one of the top 50 institutions in the world that are under 50 years old.
