About the University of Birmingham and Scholarship
The University of Birmingham has a rich history dating back to the early days of medical education in the region. It has its roots in Queen’s College, which aimed to establish a medical school with strong Christian principles, setting it apart from other contemporary medical schools in London. The Birmingham Medical School’s origins can be traced back to the medical education seminars conducted by John Tomlinson, who was the first surgeon at the Birmingham Workhouse Infirmary and later at the Birmingham General Hospital. These seminars, held during the winter of 1767-68, were the first of their kind in England and Wales.
The first clinical teaching activities were carried out by medical apprentices at the General Hospital, which was founded in 1779. The medical school that evolved from the Birmingham Workhouse Infirmary was officially founded in 1828, although William Sands Cox had already begun teaching in December 1825. The Clinical Hospital in Birmingham was granted royal patronage by Queen Victoria, allowing it to be known as “The Queen’s Hospital.” This hospital held the distinction of being the first provincial teaching hospital in England. In 1843, the medical college became known as Queen’s College.
Over the years, the University of Birmingham has achieved recognition and accolades. In 2013, it was named the ‘Sunday Times University of the Year 2014.’ The 2013 QS World University Rankings placed Birmingham University 10th in the UK and 62nd internationally. The university performed well in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, ranking 12th in the UK. Its research was deemed world-leading in 16% of cases and internationally excellent in 41%, with particular strengths in fields such as music, physics, biosciences, computer science, mechanical engineering, political science, international relations, and law. Course satisfaction among students also saw significant improvement.
While Birmingham University historically focused on science, engineering, commerce, and coal mining, it has since expanded its academic offerings. The university was proud to host the first Cancer Research UK Centre and has made notable contributions to the field of gravitational-wave astronomy, housing the Institute of Gravitational Wave Astronomy.
The School of Chemistry at the University of Birmingham is dedicated to recognizing and rewarding its top incoming international students. This scholarship program celebrates the academic achievements of students before they commence their studies at the university.
