About the University of Essex

An English county named Essex is home to the University of Essex, a public research university. One of the first universities made of plate glass, it was founded in 1965 by royal charter. The motto “Thought the harder, Heart the keener” is taken from the Anglo-Saxon epic The Battle of Maldon, and the university shield has the historic arms attributed to the Kingdom of Essex. With its main campus in Wivenhoe Park, it has three campuses spread across the county, two of which are in Southend-on-Sea and one in Loughton.

In addition to being crowned University of the Year at the Times Higher Education Awards in 2018 and receiving a Gold rating for teaching excellence from the TEF, Essex is also recognized as a world-class institution of higher learning for its emphasis on original research by the REF.

Her Majesty, The Queen granted the Regius Professorship to Essex’s Department of Government in 2013 and the Queen’s Anniversary Prize to the university twice for its support of social and economic research in 2009 and 2017. The institution’s annual revenue for 2021–2022 was £272.6 million, of which £30.2 million came from grants and contracts for research, with an associated expenditure of £313.8 million.

Candidates will receive a scholarship worth £4,500 as a reduction in their tuition.
