University of Nottingham Sporting Excellence Award for International Students, UK 2023/2024

Application is now open for the University of Nottingham Sporting Excellence Award for International Students. Interested applicants are encouraged to send in their applications before the deadline date.

About the University of Nottingham and Scholarship

The roots of the University of Nottingham can be traced back to the founding of an adult education school in 1798 and the inception of University Extension Lectures by the University of Cambridge in 1873, marking the first of its kind in the country. While the establishment has various historical milestones, the formal foundation of the university is commonly associated with the creation of University College Nottingham in 1881. This college aimed to prepare students for examinations conducted by the University of London.

An anonymous donor played a pivotal role in 1875 by contributing £10,000 to establish the Adult Education School and Cambridge Extension Lectures permanently. The Corporation of Nottingham is also committed to constructing and maintaining a dedicated building for these purposes. The foundation stone of the college was laid in 1877 by former Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone. The neo-Gothic building on Shakespeare Street was officially opened in 1881 by Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany. At its inception, the college had four professors specializing in Literature, Physics, Chemistry, and Natural Science.

The subsequent years witnessed a rapid expansion of the institution. New departments and chairs were introduced, including Engineering in 1884, Classics combined with Philosophy in 1893, French in 1897, and Education in 1905. Further developments included the creation of separate departments for Physics and Mathematics in 1905, the establishment of the Departments of English and Mining in 1911, Economics in 1912, and Geology combined with Geography. History was added in 1914, Adult Education in 1923, and Pharmacy in 1925.

The University of Nottingham has received prestigious accolades, including being named “University of the Year” by Times Higher Education in 2006 and “Entrepreneurial University of the Year” in 2008. In the 2010 Sunday Times rankings, it secured the runner-up position for “University of the Year.” Further recognition came in 2016–17 when Nottingham was designated ‘University of the Year’ for graduate employment by The Sunday Times. Described by the Fulbright Commission as “one of the UK’s oldest, largest, and most prestigious universities,” Nottingham achieved the rank of 126th globally among universities in the 2019 SCImago Institutions Rankings.

The institution is providing full-time tuition scholarships worth £5,000 to overseas students with exceptional athletic talent, regardless of their study level. The foundation, bronze, silver, and gold-level sports scholarships offered by the school are not included in the International Sporting Excellence Awards package.
