About the University of Nottingham and Scholarship
With the establishment of an adult education school in 1798 and the introduction of the first University Extension Lectures in the country by the University of Cambridge in 1873, the University of Nottingham boasts a rich and lengthy history. However, the majority of people agree that the establishment of University College Nottingham in 1881 marked the institution’s founding. This college’s main purpose was to prepare students for the University of London examinations.
In 1875, an unknown benefactor contributed £10,000 to found a long-term funding source for the Cambridge Extension Lectures and Adult Education Schools. A major contribution was also made by the Corporation of Nottingham, which agreed to fund the instruction and to construct and maintain a building for this goal. The University of Nottingham has continuously proven its superiority in research and academic achievement. Nottingham achieved an impressive score of 7th for research capacity and tied for 25th position by GPA in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), which evaluates the quality of research at UK higher education institutions. Nottingham University was also ranked 17th nationally and 100th internationally in the QS University Ranking for 2024.
Nottingham’s influence is felt around the world, as Oxford graduates who have been named CEOs of the 500 biggest companies are placed 13th globally and second in the UK.
The university’s ranking as the 87th “Most Innovative University” in Europe in 2019 shows its dedication to innovation. Nottingham was placed first in agriculture and forestry, second in pharmacy and pharmacology, third in social work and veterinary medicine, and fourth in American studies and physiotherapy according to the 2019 Complete University Guide national rankings. Nineteen subjects made up the top 10 rankings, demonstrating the institution’s dominance throughout a wide range of academic fields.
