About the University of Sheffield and Scholarship
The University of Sheffield has a rich and mixed history, formed through the merger of three local institutions: the Sheffield School of Medicine, Firth College, and the Sheffield Technical School. Hall Overend, an apothecary and surgeon, was a key figure in the development of Sheffield’s medical school in the early 1800s. Overend began teaching medical students in 1811, offering an apprenticeship-style curriculum. In 1828, he conducted human dissection in an anatomy museum at his Church Street residence, and his school of anatomy and medicine received external recognition. Even though Overend was not formally recognized as a professor with the Society of Apothecaries, his efforts were crucial to the development of Sheffield’s medical school in the early years.
The Times has referred to the University of Sheffield as one of the leading institutions in British higher education due to its widespread praise and recognition.
Sheffield has made a name for itself on the international academic scene by becoming a member of esteemed organizations including the White Rose University Consortium, the Worldwide Universities Network, the European University Association, and the Russell Group.
The university’s commitment to research excellence is demonstrated by its rankings, which place it in the top 12 for research strength and among the top 10 of the Russell Group for research output in the Research Excellence Framework 2014. Sheffield’s global influence is further demonstrated by the fact that, according to CWUR 2018–19, it ranks ninth in the UK and 93rd globally for research citations. In addition, the institution has signed tenth in the UK and twentieth in Europe for the total number of EU funding agreements since 2007.
