President’s PhD Scholarships – Eligibility Criteria

Candidates are advised to meet the following conditions to be qualified for the President’s PhD Scholarships at Imperial College London:

  • Applicants must have earned a first-class undergraduate degree or an integrated master’s degree, or be on track to do so if none has been earned.
  • Applicants must possess a distinguished stand-alone Master’s degree, or if not, they must be able to demonstrate extraordinary success leading to the awarding of such degree.
  • Candidates must still have earned a first-class degree or its equivalent, even if they have only finished one undergraduate degree or an integrated Master’s degree.
  • Talented candidates are invited to apply from Imperial College London, the UK, and other nations. Although there are no restrictions based on nationality, some departments may not be able to support applicants from other nations.
  • For this program, only new Ph.D. applicants are accepted.

Application Procedure for President’s PhD Scholarships

Application process

  • No particular scholarship application form exists. 
  • Your department will nominate you for the scholarship based on your academic merit and potential once you submit your application for admission to study at Imperial using the online admissions system.

You must fulfill any extra application requirements specified by your department of choice in addition to the rules for the admissions process that are unique to scholarships.

Extra guidelines for admissions

  • The earliest start date for financed spots for the 2024–2025 academic year is August 1, 2024, while the latest start date is November 1, 2024.
  • You are required to provide a two-page paper when asked to submit a personal statement.
  1. A personal statement, which should contain your reasons for applying to Imperial and for the scholarship as well as any other supporting materials you feel would strengthen your application but aren’t included elsewhere on the form, should be on the first page.
  2. Your research proposal should be on the second page. If your department shortlists you for the scholarship after you have submitted your application, you may submit revised copies of your statement if necessary. It is suggested that you write in the first person.
  • When asked for the names of two academic referees, including individuals who can vouch for you academically to support your candidacy (such as your thesis supervisor or personal tutor). It is not appropriate to mention your intended PhD advisor. It is recommended that you forward this guidance to both of your referees, emphasizing in particular the need to avoid using gender pronouns and instead use the phrase “they/them.”
  • In the online application form, under the “Additional Questions” tab, you must check this option to be eligible for the President’s PhD Scholarship program.
