About the University of Queensland and Scholarship

The Queensland University Extension Movement was founded in 1893 by several private individuals to garner support from the greater community for a university in Queensland. They planned open lectures for adult education. In 1894, 245 students registered for the extended sessions, and they found the lectures to be useful and practical. To provide interested delegates with a forum to promote the idea of a university, the University Extension Movement established the University Congress in 1906.

The notion of a Queensland University was evolved into a draft bill, which aroused attention. It was highlighted how important and useful a university degree is to Queensland’s economy. Queensland’s Premier Kidston has received the Congress’s proceedings. In October 1906, Victoria Park was gazetted for use by universities on 60 acres.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Queensland’s separation from the colony of New South Wales, the State Parliament passed an act on December 10, 1909, establishing the University of Queensland. Sir William MacGregor, the new Governor, was chosen to serve as the first chancellor, and RH Roe as the vice-chancellor. The Act established a senate of 20 people to govern the university. Old Government House… [formerly Government House] on George Street was reserved for the university after the governor moved there from his residence in Fernberg, which started the first discussions about the best place for the university to be built.

In 1910, the initial teaching faculties were established. Among them were chemistry, mathematics, engineering, and the classics. In December of the same year, the Senate chose the first four professors: BD Steele for chemistry, JL Michie for classics, H. Priestley for mathematics, and A Gibson for engineering. In 1911, the first pupils enrolled. Sir William MacGregor served as the university’s first chancellor in 1911, while RH Roe served as vice-chancellor. The university’s initial classes were held in the Government House with 83 new students. The University of Queensland conferred degrees on its initial graduating class in 1914.
