About Wright State University and Scholarship

Wright State University, founded in 1964, had humble beginnings as a branch campus of Miami University and Ohio State University. It initially occupied just one building, reflecting a time when the region needed a public university for higher education. The groundwork for establishing this institution began in 1961, driven by the collective desire to provide accessible higher education in the region. To bring this vision to life, a community-wide fundraising effort was launched in 1962, which successfully raised the required $3 million in seed money to make the university a reality.

The campus found its home on land generously donated by the United States Air Force, utilizing excess acreage from the adjacent Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. This partnership with the Air Force played a significant role in the early development of the university.

In 1965, the Ohio General Assembly passed legislation that marked a pivotal moment in the university’s history. It transformed the branch campus into a separate and independent institution, complete with its own Advisory Committee, on November 5, 1965. Rapid growth in enrollment, with projections to reach 5,000 full-time students within two years, indicated that the campus was well on its way to achieving full independent status.

On October 1, 1967, the institution officially became Wright State University following a decision by the Ohio Board of Regents. The name was chosen in honor of the Wright brothers, celebrated Dayton residents who achieved world-renowned fame for inventing the world’s first successful airplane. This choice was a fitting tribute, given the university’s location in the birthplace of aviation.

Wright State’s commitment to education extended beyond its main campus. In 1969, the university established a 173-acre branch campus located on the picturesque shore of Grand Lake St. Marys in Celina, Ohio. This move expanded the university’s reach and impact.
