The University of Bradford has a rich and storied history that can be traced back to its early beginnings. It all started with the establishment of the Mechanics Institute in 1832, a response to the growing demand for skilled workers who possessed relevant workplace skills. Over the years, this institute evolved, eventually becoming the Bradford Technical College in 1882. In 1957, a significant milestone was reached when the Bradford Institute of Technology emerged as a College of Advanced Technology, thereby taking responsibility for higher education courses.
The physical growth of the university’s campus mirrors its academic development. Notable construction projects include the iconic Richmond Building, which began to take shape in 1963, becoming the largest building on campus. In addition to this, the Horton Building and Chesham Building were added on the opposite side of Richmond Road, enhancing the campus’s facilities and resources.
The official recognition of the institution came in 1966 when a charter of incorporation was granted, marking the birth of the University of Bradford. In the 1970s, it emerged as a key international hub for Yugoslav studies, notably with the establishment of the University of Bradford Postgraduate School of Yugoslav Studies, serving as a cornerstone in this field. The Research Unit in Yugoslav Studies at Bradford was founded in 1965, with the significant involvement of the distinguished British geographer, Frederick Bernard Singleton.

These efforts culminated in the university being awarded the ‘Outstanding Contribution to Sustainable Development’ accolade at The Times Higher Education Awards for two consecutive years, underscoring its commitment to environmental sustainability.
The University of Bradford has made a name for itself in the education landscape. The Times Good University Guide recognized the university as 7th in the UK for graduate employment in 2005 and an impressive 2nd in 2006. The institution’s strong reputation in research and knowledge transfer is reflected in its ranking among the Top 50 English Universities based on research funding (HEFCE 2009–10). Notably, the staff-student ratios at the University of Bradford are among the best in the UK, as it falls in the 2nd quartile for staff-student ratios in The Independent, The Times, and The Guardian League Tables.

These scholarships, each valued at £1,000, are applied as fee discounts in the first and second years of the program. They are open to applications from pharmacists assessed as home, UK students who are registered with the GPhC and working in a patient-facing capacity in Community Pharmacy or Primary Care in the UK. These scholarships exemplify the university’s dedication to supporting and promoting education and research excellence.
