About Wells College and Scholarship
Established in 1868 as Wells Seminary by Henry Wells, co-founder of Wells Fargo and the American Express Company, Wells College has evolved into a prestigious institution known for its commitment to academic excellence and leadership development. Originally founded as a women’s college, it adopted its current name, Wells College, in 1870.
The college faced a significant challenge in 1888 when its main building, constructed on donated property, burned to the ground. Undeterred, Wells College emerged stronger, unveiling the current Main Building in 1890, a testament to resilience and determination. Notably, in 1906, the Alumnae Association gifted Henry Wells’ mansion, Glen Park, to the college, showcasing the enduring connection between the institution and its benefactors.
Architect Walter Netsch made a mark in 1965 with the Louis Jefferson Long Library, an award-winning structure that inspired the design of other campus buildings, including Barler Music Hall and Campbell Art Building.
The college is proud of its historical connections to Frances Folsom, a member of the Wells Class of 1885, who became the youngest First Lady of the United States when she married President Grover Cleveland in 1886. Frances Cleveland preserved her relationship with Wells College by sitting on the board of trustees for an astounding 50 years.
Within the academic sphere, Wells College has demonstrated itself time and time again. In the 2023 rankings, Wells was rated 152 (tied) out of all liberal arts institutions in the US by U.S. News. Further, the college was recognized as one of the Top Performers on Social Mobility, placing it at 10 (tied), displaying its dedication to helping students flourish in their careers.
Wells College is known for its global outlook and for providing study-abroad opportunities, most notably in Florence, Italy. The university has set up centers that focus on business, entrepreneurship, sustainability, and book arts, enhancing the educational experience for its varied student base.
Wells College upholds a strict code of honor that fosters honesty and integrity. Students pledge to uphold the Honor Code, refrain from dishonest behavior, and promote an academically honest environment.
