University of East London Young Independent Student Bursary, UK 2023/2024

Application is now open for the Young Independent Student Bursary at the University of East London. Interested applicants are encouraged to send in their applications.

About the University of East London and Scholarship

UEL’s founding dates back to 1892 when the newly created County Borough of West Ham decided to construct the West Ham Technical Institute to serve the neighborhood. John Passmore Edwards described the institute as a “people’s university” while speaking during the building’s dedication. The college offered courses in science, engineering, and the arts. It also created its own internal degree programs in engineering and science, which the University of London approved. It also had a women’s section.

South West Essex Technical College and South East Essex Technical College were established by Essex County Council in Walthamstow and Dagenham as the need for technical education increased throughout the 1930s and 1940s. The North East London Polytechnic was established in 1970 as a result of the merging of these three institutions (West Ham, Walthamstow, and Dagenham). Buildings like the 1982-built Arthur Edwards building on the Stratford campus modernized and revitalized campuses.

One of the “new universities” that year was the University of East London, which replaced the Polytechnic of East London. The series of founding institutions for UEL is a good example of the changes in British higher and further education policy that occurred in the late 19th and early 20th century. The Barking Campus, which was shut down in 2006, and the Stratford Campus made up the University of East London. The Docklands Campus, the city’s first brand-new university campus in more than 50 years, was inaugurated in 1999.

Undergraduate and graduate degrees are offered at UEL. In addition, several of the single honors programs provide extended degree options. In these programs, in addition to the typical three-year curriculum, students also complete a foundation year. A variety of postgraduate degrees are available via UEL, including taught master’s degrees, professional doctorates, and research degrees like MPhils and PhDs.

UEL has three campuses, two of which are in Stratford and one in Docklands. University Square Stratford, the newest campus, debuted in September 2013. The campus in Barking was shut down in 2006. At the Barking Learning Center in a neighboring borough, UEL offers programs and short courses. Off-campus, students are enrolled in programs offered by academic partners in the UK and abroad, such as the Women’s Institute of Management in Malaysia.
