According to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021, UQ was ranked in the top 50 internationally in 20 areas. In terms of sports-related topics, UQ is first in Australia, second in the world, and third in the world in mineral and mining engineering.

In 2015, Nature Index named UQ the research institution in the southern hemisphere with the highest volume of research output in the transdisciplinary journals Nature and Science, with around twice as much output as the global average.

David Akers, a UQ alumnus who enjoys history and travel, founded the Akers Family History Travel Grant in 2022. David studied history, English, and economics for his BA (Hons) between 1981 and 1984. His interest in history was sparked, in part, by the family’s reaction to the passing of his uncle Clark Davis Irwin during World War II.
