About American University Washington College of Law and the Scholarship

An American University, a private research institution in Washington, D.C., has a law school called the American University Washington College of Law (AUWCL or WCL). It can be found in Tenleytown, a neighborhood in northwest Washington, D.C., on the side of Tenley Circle that faces west. Both the American Bar Association and the AALS have accredited the institution.

WCL was the first law school to be established in 1896 by a woman, to have a female dean, and to have an all-female graduating class. The school continues to provide programs in both public interest law and human rights. Scholarships are offered by WCL’s Equal Justice Foundation (EJF) to students who complete unpaid summer internships with public interest groups. The American University Washington College of Law is happy to provide several scholarship opportunities to support professionals who can prove their academic excellence, need financial assistance, and need one of the available scholarships.

Candidates may only choose one scholarship category. These scholarships only pay for tuition since there isn’t enough money to cover them. The majority of the scholarships will go to early applicants. Only one scholarship application per category may be submitted by candidates.

These scholarships are intended to assist professionals who have a strong academic record, a need for financial assistance, and who fall under one of the following categories: Scholarships from the Alumni Fund ScholarshipAUWCL Global Talent Development ScholarshipInter-American Moot Court ScholarshipInformation Justice FellowshipLaw & Government FellowshipSummer Program Scholarship are also available.

Scholarship credits may only be used for the second consecutive program session by recipients of master’s degree (LL.M.) scholarships in human rights and humanitarian law. Under specific conditions, students may ask for permission to submit applications for up to 3 credits within the first year of the program. The Human Rights and Humanitarian Law program will evaluate each application as it is submitted.

The following requirements must be met to qualify for the American University Washington College of Law Scholarship:

  • Candidates must be either domestic or international.
  • Applicants from developing countries, people with varied backgrounds, or those in challenging situations
  • Students who have a strong commitment to working in the public interest or for the government after graduation;
  • Academic rigor and commitment to the study of international copyright law among high achievers
  • Outstanding LL.M. candidates have the potential to become leaders in their field(s) of study or practice.
  • Students with high academic standing and a commitment to serving the greater good.
