AUFRANDE facilitates a unique opportunity for researchers to embark on their PhD journey in both France and Australia, engaging in industry-supported research projects. The program seeks a highly motivated researcher to spearhead an innovative project co-hosted by the Université de Bordeaux in France and the University of New South Wales in Australia.
The specific position, “Advanced surface modified materials for Li-ion batteries” (DC29), offers candidates the chance to choose from three cutting-edge projects outlined on the AUFRANDE website. The successful candidate will enter into a 36-month employment contract with the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique – Institut de Chimie de la Matière Condensée de Bordeaux (UMR5026) in France. Simultaneously, they will be enrolled as a PhD candidate at both Université de Bordeaux in France and the University of New South Wales in Australia, where they will spend a significant 12-month period.

In addition to the residential year in Australia, the successful candidate will join a cohort of 64 Ph.D. fellows, participating in regular events designed to foster collaboration and the sharing of experiences. Eligibility Criteria for AUFRANDE Advanced PhD Scholarship Program
- Applicants are advised to meet the following requirements to be eligible for the AUFRANDE Advanced PhD Scholarship Program at the University of New South Wales:
- Candidates must not hold a doctorate at this time. Scholars who have successfully defended their PhD thesis but have not received their doctorate in writing will not be permitted to apply.
- The applicants’ primary activity (job, studies, etc.) may not have been completed for more than 12 months in France during the three years before the call deadline (i.e., since January 24, 2021). Time spent completing procedures to gain refugee status under the 1967 Protocol and the 1951 Refugee Convention, mandatory national service, and/or brief visits, such as vacations, are not considered.
- At the time of the call deadline, applicants might not already be working for the selected research host permanently.
- Both the French and the Australian enrolling universities have academic requirements for doctorate program entrance, which applicants must fulfill.
- Candidates must have speaking and writing proficiency in English at the C1 level.
Selection Procedure
- Online application: Before January 24, 2024, submit your completed application using the online portal. Please take note that applications that do not meet the requirements of both AUFRANDE and the two PhD awarding universities will be rejected.
- Eligibility check: The AUFRANDE Team and the two Ph.D. granting organizations will verify that your application satisfies the MSCA eligibility standards and complies with all regulations.
- Evaluation of eligible applications and initial ranking: Applications that satisfy the requirements for eligibility will be evaluated against the Evaluation Criteria by the designated Selection Panel (for further details, consult the AUFRANDE website’s Guide for Evaluators).
- Interviews: Candidates who make the Selection Panel’s shortlist will be invited to a videoconference interview. At least five days before the interview date, candidates will be contacted.
- Final ranking and position distribution: You will receive a conditional offer letter for admission to the AUFRANDE Program if you are the chosen candidate for the role and perform well in the interview.
- Onboarding of Selected Candidates: To become a Doctoral Candidate, you must finish the registration process at both of the PhD granting institutions—France and Australia—and sign an official employment contract at your research host. The institutions will subsequently send you your offer letters.
- Between July and October of 2024, begin work on your PhD.
