About Manchester Metropolitan University and Scholarship

Manchester Metropolitan University has a rich history, originating from various mergers of colleges with diverse specializations. It can trace its roots back to institutions like the Manchester Mechanics Institute, Manchester School of Art (formerly known as Manchester School of Design), and the Manchester College of Science and Technology, which later became UMIST. Over the years, several schools, colleges, and institutions were added, leading to the formation of Manchester Polytechnic in 1970.

Subsequent mergers, including those with Didsbury College of Education, Hollings College, and City of Manchester College of Higher Education, eventually led to the university’s establishment as a corporate body in 1989. MMU was part of the founding members of the Northern Consortium in 1987.

The university initially operated on seven different campuses, but it later decided to consolidate its estate by closing six of them. The Alsager campus’s work was transferred to Crewe, and the Aytoun campus was closed in 2012 when a Business School was opened on the main campus. In 2014, the Elizabeth Gaskell, Hollings, and Didsbury campuses were shut down, with their faculties relocated to the main city center campus in Manchester. The Crewe campus closed in 2019 following a review conducted by Deloitte.

Today, Manchester Metropolitan University is recognized as the ninth most popular university in the UK based on applications (UCAS 2021/22 entry). It was the university with the highest number of accepted applicants from the LGBT+ community in 2020, with 720 enrollees.

The university offers prestigious scholarships, the Chancellor’s and Vice Chancellor’s International Awards, to outstanding international students who have received offers for courses in selected subject areas. These scholarships are awarded in limited numbers and provide financial support ranging from £6,000 to £8,000 in the first year of study. To apply for these scholarships, applicants must complete an online application and submit a 500-word personal statement outlining their academic background, motivation for choosing Manchester Metropolitan University, and how their chosen course will contribute to their career goals.
