University of Queensland Chemical Engineering Student Society Bursary, Australia for 2023

Application is now open for the Chemical Engineering Student Society Bursary at the University of Queensland. Interested applicants are encouraged to send their applications in before the deadline date.

About the University of Queensland and Scholarship

On April 16, 1910, with the gazetting of nominations to the first UQ Senate, the University of Queensland, the first institution in the state, was legally created. A State Parliament Act passed in 1909 created it. Education started in 1911 in the Old Government House on George Street in Brisbane. There were three faculties (Arts, Science, and Engineering) and 83 students (60 men and 23 women) in the first year.

After the First World War, the University soon outgrew its location in the central city. In 1922, a second site in Victoria Park was acquired, which is now home to the Medical School. Four years later, Dr. James O’Neil Mayne and his sister Miss Mary Emelia Mayne contributed funds to buy the St. Lucia land that is now home to the university’s main campus. After development on the St. Lucia site started, the first building was completed in 1939 and became known as the Forgan Smith edifice in honor of the then-Premier. In the South West Pacific during World War II, it functioned as the cutting-edge command hub for the Allied Land Forces.

In 1990, the two oldest institutions of higher learning in the State—the University and the Queensland Agricultural College—merged in what is now Gatton, 80 kilometers west of Brisbane. This merger greatly increased enrollments and combined the two oldest institutions of higher learning in the State. The former Queensland Agricultural College opened its doors to its first students in 1897, and since then, the two institutions have worked together on a variety of teaching and research initiatives.

However, using the area once used by the Challinor Centre mental health institution, UQ built a sizable campus in Ipswich, the provincial capital, in 1999. UQ kept on instructing at the USQ Ipswich location until 2016 to aid certain students in completing their degrees. In January 2015, this campus was given to the University of Southern Queensland.

Based on its performance across QS, THE, and ARWU, UQ was the 42nd best-ranked university in the world in 2022, according to the Aggregate Rankings of Top Universities published by UNSW. The university enjoys a solid reputation in several engineering-related subjects. It is ranked third in the world for mining and mineral engineering, 76–100th for chemical engineering, 76–100th for civil engineering, 101–150th for material science and engineering, and 101–150th for electrical and electronic engineering.
