About Goldsmiths University of London and Scholarship
The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, one of the City of London’s Livery Companies, established The Goldsmiths’ Technical and Recreative Institute (more generally known as the “Goldsmiths’ Institute”) in 1891. As a guild for goldsmiths, silversmiths, and jewelers in medieval times, the Goldsmiths’ Company was founded in the 12th century. The Livery Company pledged to “the promotion of technical skill, knowledge, health, and general well-being among men and women of the industrial, working, and artisan classes” as it set the foundation for its new Institute. The Richard Hoggart Building, currently in the middle of the site, was the original Institute’s headquarters and was located in New Cross, the location of the former Royal Naval School.
After merging with the University of London, the school was rebuilt as Goldsmiths’ College in 1904 (the word “College” was dropped in a 2006 rebranding). The apostrophe was removed in 1993. At the time, Goldsmiths was the primary supplier of teacher preparation in the country. Later, the scope of the training responsibilities was expanded to include teacher refresher courses, university postgraduate certifications in education, and certification programs for art teachers. The college also had a separate infant school.
Shortly after the merger, in 1907, Goldsmiths erected a new Arts building designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield. The main structure of the college was destroyed by an incendiary bomb in 1940, and it wasn’t entirely reconstructed until 1947. As a result, the staff and students of the institution were moved to University College, Nottingham during World War II.
The location of Goldsmiths is in New Cross, a bustling neighborhood in southeast London with a vibrant arts and music scene. The main structure, the Richard Hoggart Building, was initially created by the architect John Shaw, Jr. (1803-1870) as a school (opened in 1844). Academic conferences and seminars are held at the historic Deptford Town Hall building, which Henry Vaughan Lanchester and Edwin Alfred Rickards built and which was purchased in 1998. In addition, Goldsmiths has constructed several additional contemporary structures to expand the campus, including the RIBA Award-winning Rutherford Building, finished in 1997, the Will Alsop-designed Ben Pimlott Building, finished in 2005, and the Professor Stuart Hall Building, formerly known as the New Academic Building, finished in 2010.
The Media and Communications department at Goldsmiths was ranked eighth in the world and second in the UK in 2017; however, by 2020, it had dropped to the UK’s 18th-best department. The overall national rankings for Goldsmiths are around the 70th spot, and the school received the lowest possible score—Bronze—in the TEF.

- MA/MSc and UG (BA/BSc) Domestic and foreign graduates from the department of computing, both full-time and part-time
