Application is now open for the Schlumberger Foundation Fellowship at Cranfield University. Interested applicants are encouraged to send their applications in before the deadline date.

About Cranfield University and Fellowship

Science, engineering, design, technology, and management are the areas of specialization of Cranfield University in the United Kingdom, a public research institution open only to postgraduate students. Cranfield was established in 1946 as the College of Aeronautics (CoA). The growth and diversification into other industries, including manufacturing and management, spurred by the advancement of aviation research throughout the 1950s and 1960s resulted in the establishment of the Cranfield School of Management in 1967. The College of Aeronautics was transformed into the Cranfield Institute of Technology in 1969, received a royal charter, obtained the authority to grant degrees, and became a university. It received its present name in 1993.

There are two sites for Cranfield University: the main campus is at Cranfield, Bedfordshire, and the other is at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom in Shrivenham, southwest Oxfordshire. The main campus is unusual in the UK (and Europe) for having its aircraft used for teaching and research, as well as its airfield, Cranfield Airfield.

The academic partner in the Milton Keynes City Council and Cranfield University’s effort to found a new university in neighboring Milton Keynes under the codename MK: U is Cranfield University. The campus in Central Milton Keynes is expected to open by 2023. The partners announced an international design competition to create a new campus close to the Central train station in January 2019. Santander Bank said in May 2019 that it will provide £30 million in “seed funding” to help with construction and startup costs. The shortlisted campus proposal announcements were made on July 4, 2019. The review panel declared Hopkins Architects to have created the winning design on July 30, 2019.

The specialized areas of concentration, or Cranfield themes, of Cranfield University, are intended to bring together a variety of academic disciplines to address the major global issues in a variety of industrial and commercial sectors. These include the following: water, agriculture and food, energy and power, aerospace, manufacturing, transportation systems, defense and security, and business/management.

The long-term objective of the initiative is to close the gender gap by removing the barriers that prevent more women from joining STEM fields and encouraging them to pursue scientific professions. Future-Ready Faculty Fellows are expected to pursue positions in the public sector where their newly acquired technical and scientific skills can help provide evidence-based support for STEM policymaking. Fellows are also expected to return to their home countries after completing their studies to strengthen the STEM teaching and research faculties of their home institutions and to contribute to economic, social, and technological advancement.
