About the University of Melbourne

The public research university known as the University of Melbourne is located in Melbourne, Australia. The second-oldest university in all of Australia, it was founded in 1853, making it the first university in Victoria. While various other campuses are dispersed around Victoria, its main campus is located in Parkville, an inner district to the north of Melbourne’s CBD.

The University of Melbourne was founded by the colony of Victoria in the 19th century and is one of the six sandstone institutions in Australia. It is a member of the Group of Eight, Universitas 21, Washington University’s McDonnell International Scholars Academy, and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities. Numerous residential colleges have been linked with the university since 1872, offering housing for students and teachers as well as academic, athletic, and cultural events. On the main campus and in the surrounding suburbs, there are twelve colleges.

The university is divided into ten separate academic divisions and collaborates with a wide range of research institutes and centers, including the Grattan Institute, the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research, the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research. There are fifteen graduate programs offered by the institution, including the Melbourne Business School, Melbourne Law School, and Melbourne Medical School.

The University of Melbourne was placed 14th overall and first in Australia in the QS World University Rankings published in 2024. In the 2021–2022 edition of Times Higher Education’s annual World University Rankings, Melbourne was rated 33rd overall (first in Australia). According to SCImago Institutions Rankings, it was placed 33rd among institutions worldwide in 2022.

Melbourne was ranked first domestically and 29th globally in the most recent CWTS Leiden Ranking. The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) league ranking for 2021 placed the university at number 33 internationally and first in Australia. The University of Melbourne is placed 10th in law, 12th in education, 16th in accounting and finance, 17th in social policy and administration, 19th in sociology, 22nd in environmental studies, and 23rd in linguistics, according to the QS World University Subject Rankings 2020.

The Royal College of Surgeons of England is offering multiple applicants a scholarship worth up to $30,000 that will help them attend educational programs offered by or in collaboration with the organization or take part in clinical attachments at British hospitals that are approved for training to become fellows of the organization. A donation from Kathleen Mary Johnston, who passed away, helped fund the scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria for Donovan-Johnston Memorial Scholarship (MDHS)

Donovan-Johnston Memorial Scholarship (MDHS) applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, and Health Sciences must have exceptional graduate researchers enrolled in their program. a doctor who is engaged in a graduate program in research at the Melbourne Medical School. participate in clinical attachments at one or more UK hospitals approved for training toward fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons of England OR attend educational courses offered by or in partnership with the Royal College of Surgeons of England to meet the Ph.D. entrance criteria for the Faculty.

Selection Standards: 

  • The selection of qualified candidates is based on academic achievement, faculty scholarship score, demonstrated expertise in the field of interest, career aspirations, and trust terms and circumstances. The student’s project proposal, curriculum vitae, faculty scholarship score, academic transcripts, and referee reviews will all be taken into consideration by the selection committee when making its decision.
