About Leiden University and Scholarship
In Leiden, the Netherlands, there is a public research institution known as Leiden University (abbreviated as LEI; Dutch: Universiteit Leiden). As a thank you to the city of Leiden for its defense against Spanish raids during the Eighty Years’ War, William, Prince of Orange founded it as a Protestant university in 1575. It has a strong reputation across Europe and the world being the first higher education institution established in the Netherlands.
Known for its historical roots and focus on the social sciences, the university rose to prominence particularly during the Dutch Golden Age, when academics from all over Europe were drawn to the Dutch Republic because of its intellectually open environment and Leiden’s global reputation. René Descartes, Rembrandt, Christiaan Huygens, Hugo Grotius, Baruch Spinoza, and Baron d’Holbach all made Leiden their home during this time.
The university is home to more than 40 national and international research institutions, seven academic colleges, and more than fifty subject departments. Leiden University institution The Hague, a liberal arts institution, and some of its faculties are housed on a second campus in The Hague, which is where its historical original site is located. It is a founding member of the League of European Research Universities, a member of the Europaeum, and the Coimbra Group.
In addition to Enrico Fermi, the university has produced twenty-six Spinoza Prize winners and sixteen Nobel Prize winners. Queen Juliana, Queen Beatrix, and King Willem-Alexander are all former students, and it is intimately linked to the Dutch royal family.
Students at Leiden University from many disciplines have been able to receive financial aid for coursework and research projects thanks to the Minerva Scholarship Fund Foundation (MSF) since 2009. Outstanding student initiatives abroad are another goal of the MSF.
Specific Information
The Minerva Scholarship Fund Foundation is an ANBI-recognized charity under Dutch income tax laws. Contributions to the foundation are tax deductible. Donations must fulfill specific requirements to be eligible for ANBI designation.
Background
The Minerva Scholarship Fund Foundation works to provide financial aid for study and research in a variety of academic fields. Unique student activities are supported by the MSF actively both domestically and internationally. The Minerva Scholarship Fund was started by the Leiden Minerva Student Association.

Eligibility Criteria for Minerva Scholarship Fund
- You are enrolled at Leiden University as a bachelor’s or master’s student.
- You are not required to join L.S.V. Minerva.
- The application relates to a unique or esteemed study or research endeavor, whether conducted in the Netherlands or elsewhere.
- One of the following categories best describes the project: internship, study, or research. Complete Master’s programs and Ph.D. tracks are not eligible.
Obligations
- You must deliver a project report with supplementary photographs within three months of the project’s conclusion.
Interview Date, and Process for Minerva Scholarship Fund
- The allocation committee made up of Leiden academics from several fields, will assess each application by predetermined standards. The significance of the study and how it will increase scholarly understanding are taken into account during the review process.
- One month (maximum) following the application deadline, you will be notified if you have been selected for a scholarship.
Application Process for Minerva Scholarship Fund
- Please download and complete the Application form MSF 2023.
- Verify that you have all the necessary papers on hand (the list of attachments is below).
- Use the following Google Docs form to complete it.
- Before November 15th, mail the entire application package to the address on the application.
List of attachments that should be digitally uploaded together with the application form:
- Motivation letter
- List of grades
- At least one recommendation letter
- Explanation of the project
- Budget
- Resume
Note: You will get an email confirming your application after all conditions have been satisfied. Only if you receive this email of confirmation will your application be regarded as legitimate. The Allocation Committee will evaluate a legitimate application. Your scholarship grant or denial will then be communicated to you as soon as feasible after the deadline has passed. Should you be given a scholarship, the money will be sent to your bank account within six weeks.
