Established in 1909 by the Queensland parliament, UQ is one of the country’s oldest and most prestigious institutions. It is part of the elite group of sandstone universities, representing the oldest university in each state of Australia. UQ is renowned for its academic excellence and is a founding member of edX, a leader in online education. UQ’s main St Lucia campus is located in the beautiful riverside suburb of St Lucia, which is southwest of the Brisbane central business district. The university’s footprint extends throughout Queensland, with notable campuses such as Gatton and the Mayne Medical School. Additionally, UQ has international connections, including its North American office in Washington D.C. and the UQ-Ochsner Clinical School in Louisiana, United States.

UQ has earned recognition for its significant research contributions, with Nature Index ranking it as the top research institution in the southern hemisphere for research output in interdisciplinary journals Nature and Science. In 2020, Clarivate acknowledged the expertise of 34 UQ professors by naming them Highly Cited Researchers. This signifies their substantial influence and contributions to their respective fields.

The Dorothy Marsden Undergraduate Scholarship, established in 2021, serves as a tribute to the life of Dorothy Marsden, who held the distinction of being the oldest alumna of The Women’s College until her passing in June 2020 at the remarkable age of 101 years. Dorothy Marsden was an accomplished graduate of the University of Queensland, having completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree with Honours.
