About Birkbeck University of London and Scholarship

Although Birkbeck College, University of London continues to be the institution’s full legal name, Birkbeck, University of London was the university’s rebranding in 2002 after removing the term “College” from its preferred name. The University of London’s Chancellor, The Princess Royal, rededicated the building on Malet Street in 2003 after a significant renovation. To expand its services into East London, Birkbeck collaborated with the University of East London and received a £5 million grant from the Higher Education Funding Council for England in 2006. On November 21st, 2006, Birkbeck Stratford, the collaboration, was publicly introduced.

The largest university of London College that does not provide its degrees is Birkbeck. Birkbeck has had the authority to provide its degrees since 2012, but instead of doing so, it prefers to issue University of London degrees. It also provides a variety of short courses, foundation degrees, certificates, and diplomas as part of its continuing education offerings.

In a press statement issued before the end of October 2022, the University and College Union said that Birkbeck was purportedly considering reorganizing its workforce to make up for a multi-million dollar shortfall, which might result in forced layoffs. The local UCU branch voted a resolution of no confidence in the senior leadership team, it was disclosed in the same press release. In November 2022, there were demonstrations at the institution over the anticipated layoffs.

According to the 2021 Times Higher Education World University Rankings for Psychology, Birkbeck was rated 95th in the world. The institution routinely ranks in the top 100 universities in the world for both philosophy and English Language & Literature. According to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020 and the QS World University Rankings 2020, Birkbeck is one of the top 350 universities on the global scale.

Birkbeck declared in 2018 that it would stop participating in UK university rankings because their methodology unfairly penalizes it. After all, “despite having highly rated teaching and research, other factors caused by its unique teaching model and unrelated to its performance push it significantly lower the ratings.”

Birkbeck was placed 26th in the Times Higher Education comparable ranking and 13th in The Guardian’s 2001 Research Assessment Exercise. Birkbeck was in the top 25% of multi-faculty higher education institutions in the UK according to the 2008 RAE findings. At 159 higher education institutions in the UK, the quality of research in a variety of fields was evaluated by the RAE. The top five national contributions came from Birkbeck and came from the fields of psychology, history, classics, archaeology, earth sciences, and history of art, film, and visual media.

The university has been able to provide students in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences financial aid for non-fieldwork expenses thanks to a kind contribution from a previous (anonymous) student. You must include supporting documentation for your application as well as proof of spending to show that the money was spent as you had asked.
