About the University of Hawai‘i and the Fellowship
The University of Hawaii System, also known as the University of Hawai’i or simply UH, is a public college and university system that distributes associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees across six islands in the state of Hawaii in the United States through three universities, seven community colleges, an employment training center, three university centers, and various other research facilities. All of the schools of the University of Hawaii are accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
Through the East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship, graduate students from Asia, the Pacific, and the United States can receive funding for their master’s and doctoral degrees to participate in leadership development, residential community building, educational, and cultural programs at the East-West Center while pursuing graduate studies at the University of Hawai’i at Mnoa (UHM). More than merely receiving a financial aid award is required to be awarded an East-West Center fellowship at UHM. Graduate student fellows at the East-West Center live together and engage in both academic and social activities with one another since the main goals of the institution are to foster an understanding of the Asia-Pacific community and to prepare students for future leadership roles.
They are a recognizable group devoted to the idea of creating an Asia-Pacific community from the very beginning. Through team-building activities, leadership development projects and internships, education about the region, cultural exchange, educational enrichment activities, community service, and service learning projects, EWC graduate degree fellows establish friendships and lifelong ties to a network of people committed to positive change in the Asia Pacific region.
The graduate degree fellowship covers a portion of the cost of meals, health insurance, incidentals, books, housing in an East-West Center dormitory, and general tuition and fees for UHM graduate programs. Funding for field research and conference presentations is made available to fellows during their academic year on a competitive basis.
The following people are qualified to apply for the East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship:
- U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents
- Russians and residents of other Pacific and Asian nations
The selection of students gives preference to those who have shown a dedication to the Asia Pacific area.

Benefits:

Eligibility Criteria for East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship
Applicants are advised to meet the following conditions to be eligible for the East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa:
- United States
- Pacific Region: New Zealand, Niue, Northern Marianas, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Wallis & Futuna Islands, American Samoa, Australia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, French Polynesia, Guam, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Caledonia.
- Southeast Asia: Thailand, Timor-Leste, Vietnam, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore.
- South Asia: Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, Maldives.
- East Asia: North Korea, South Korea, Russia, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Mongolia.
Bachelor’s Degree and Grade Point Average
Before the start of the award, graduate applicants must have earned a 4-year bachelor’s degree, or its equivalent, from an acceptable U.S. college or university, or an accredited institution of higher education abroad. Applicants frequently need to have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 (4.0=A scale) or its equivalent in all post-baccalaureate coursework as well as their last four semesters or six quarters of undergraduate education.
Application Procedure for East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowship
Graduate studies at the University of Hawaii (UH) in fields pertinent to the aims and objectives of the East-West Center (EWC) are supported by East-West Center Graduate Degree Fellowships. You must submit an application to UH Mnoa by December 1 if you are not already a categorized graduate student there for the upcoming fall semester. Every year on August 1 for admissions the following year, the University of Hawaii publishes its online application system (https://manoa.hawaii.edu/graduate/). All supporting papers for your UH admissions office and department applications must be done by January 10 regardless of whether the UH departmental deadline comes before or after that day for your EWC application to be handled quickly.
