About Flinders University and Scholarship

Public research university Flinders University has 11 sites across South Australia and the Northern Territory in addition to its main campus in Adelaide, South Australia. 

The Alcohol and Drug Foundation and Flinders University are partnering to offer a PhD Enterprise Scholarship to support a study into high-risk drinking among males, possible intervention times, and health promotion tactics to stop or alter hazardous drinking behaviors. The PhD student will be situated at Flinders University’s National Centre for Education and Training on Addiction (NCETA). In the area of alcohol and other drugs (AOD), NCETA is dedicated to acting as a catalyst for change. The ADF, whose expertise in the subject led them to choose the study question, is a co-founder of the PhD fellowship.

The foremost organization in Australia, ADF, is dedicated to encouraging positive change and providing evidence-based strategies to reduce alcohol and drug harm. Prof. Jacqueline Bowden, Director of the National Centre for Education and Training on Addiction, of Flinders University, and A/Prof. Michael Livingston, of Curtin University, will oversee this PhD Enterprise Scholarship. Both of them are eminent experts on alcohol policy. Along with Dr. Skye McPhie, Manager, of Research & Evaluation from the ADF, who will help with chances to transfer findings into practice, Prof. James Smith, a recognized expert on men’s health and health promotion research, will supervise you.  

This innovative study entails: 

  • A review of the literature to comprehend the situational and demographic risk variables that result in behaviors that raise the risk of alcohol-related damage among males.      
  • Interviews or surveys to determine what stage of the life course might intervention be most helpful to prevent the occurrence of, or change, risky drinking practices. 
  • Statistical analysis of national datasets to understand factors associated with risky drinking among men and patterns over time.

The PhD Enterprise Scholarship also includes an internship of at least 60 full-time equivalent days at the Adelaide office of ADF, which must be agreed to in writing within 18 months of application, started, and finished before the completion of the PhD. During this time, you will be embedded with the industry partner team, building your network and gaining knowledge of the routine research procedures of an organization that is a leader in its field or one that places a high value on customer service.

Eligibility Criteria for Flinders University PhD Enterprise Scholarship

Applicants are advised to meet the following conditions to be eligible for Flinders University PhD Enterprise Scholarship:

  • To be an Australian, New Zealander, or permanent resident;
  • To possess, or be eligible to obtain, an appropriate foreign visa;
  • Satisfy the Australian Honours degree Class 1 or 2A or comparable prerequisite (at least AQF Level 8), or provide proof of equivalent research experiences, such as refereed publications or considerable experience as a lead researcher, for a PhD admission requirements at Flinders University;
  • Scholarship candidates are required to begin their studies as soon as is practical, up to three months after accepting the scholarship, and within a period determined by the Office of Graduate Research in conjunction with the industrial partner. 
  • This period may be extended to six months under extraordinary circumstances with the concurrence of the industrial partner and the University.
  • Any other requirements for eligibility that are pertinent to the industrial partner or research project (such as possessing or being able to file for a National Police Criminal History Check)

It would be ideal for candidates to possess:

  • Knowledge of analyzing quantitative data
  • Experience in studies on drugs and alcohol or public health
