The main campus of the public land-grant research university system known as the University of Connecticut (UConn) is located in Storrs, Connecticut. Named for the two brothers who provided the property for the school, it was established in 1881 as the Storrs Agricultural School. The college received a public land grant in 1893, and in 1939 it changed its name to the University of Connecticut. In the next ten years, graduate, social work, and nursing programs were all established, and the university also took in the law and pharmacy schools. UConn Health was developed in the 1960s to house additional medical and dentistry schools. The New England Commission of Higher Education has accredited UConn.

The university falls under the R1 research institution category. The Hartford/Springfield regional economic and cultural collaboration alliance, often known as New England’s Knowledge Corridor, was founded by UConn as one of its founding institutions. The worldwide network of 24 research-intensive institutions, Universitas 21, accepted UConn as the second American university to join.

Over 100 majors, eight undergraduate degrees, 17 graduate degrees, and five professional degree programs are available to students at UConn. At UConn, there are 87 distinct minors available to students, some of which are disciplines without a specific major.
