In addition to an additional $5,000 for project expenditures, fellows are paid a salary of $78,000. If you are a US citizen or legal permanent resident coming from a home institution with its headquarters in the US, you can opt to have your stipend paid through your home university or to you directly.
Additional Funding
To help them settle at Radcliffe smoothly, Harvard Radcliffe Fellows may also be qualified for funding for childcare, housing, and relocation. Healthcare support is offered when required. The organization will pay the hourly salary of any Harvard undergraduate students who are hired by fellows to work as Research Partners.

Eligibility Criteria for Harvard Radcliffe Institute Fellowship
Harvard Radcliffe Fellows consistently achieve high levels of success, regardless of their area:
- Candidates in the humanities and social sciences must:
1. Be at least two years removed from receiving their doctorate (or other relevant terminal degree) in the field of their planned research before being appointed as a fellow (December 2022 for the fellowship year 2024–25).
2. Have a monograph or at least two papers published in scholarly journals or edited books.
- Candidates in science, engineering, and mathematics must:
1. Be at least two years removed from receiving their Ph.D. in the field of the proposed study before being appointed as a fellow (December 2022 for the fellowship year 2024–2025).
2. Have at least five publications published in scholarly journals. The majority of scientific, engineering, and mathematics fellows have written several papers.
Note: This isn’t meant to be a post-doctoral scholarship, though. Candidates must provide a substantial body of original research and writing.
- Candidates in the creative arts must meet discipline-specific eligibility prerequisites, as outlined below:
Film and Video: Candidates for this field must have a corpus of accomplished independent work. Typically, such works have been screened in film or video festivals, aired on television, or displayed in galleries or museums.
Visual Arts: Candidates for this sector are required to present persuasive evidence of their achievements, including a history of at least five years of work as a practicing artist, participation in at least two professional solo shows, and engagement in several curated group exhibitions.
Fiction and Nonfiction: Candidates for these fields must possess one of the following qualifications:
A contract for the publishing of a book-length manuscript, one or more published books, at least three published shorter works (longer than newspaper pieces), or all three.
Poetry: Candidates for this field must have published at least 20 poems in the last five years or a book of poetry, or be in the process of doing so.
Journalism: Candidates for this field must have at least five years of experience working as journalists professionally.
To be considered for this field, applicants must have a sizable body of independent playwriting work. Usually, this will also contain plays that are developed or under option.
Music Composition: A Ph.D. or DMA is preferred but not necessary for candidates in music composition. The candidate must, above all, provide compelling proof of their success as a working artist, including a track record of recent performances.

Some Frequently Asked Questions about the Fellowship
Can I apply if I am not a US citizen?
Yes. International candidates are invited to apply. For Harvard Radcliffe Fellows, Harvard University normally provides J-1 scholar visas.
I am currently enrolled in a Ph.D./Master’s program but will graduate before September–am I qualified to apply?
At the time of application submission, candidates cannot be enrolled in doctoral or master’s programs until their dissertation has been accepted and their degree is on the way (and all other field-specific eligibility requirements have been satisfied). Candidates must show that they have a substantial body of published, exhibited, or performed original work.
I am an independent scholar/artist/I am not affiliated with an institution. Am I qualified to apply?

Does the Harvard Radcliffe Institute Fellowship Program receive group projects?
Yes, Applications from groups of two or three people who want to collaborate on the same project are accepted by the fellowship. You would spend the whole fellowship year working on your group’s project or areas of research interest. Each group member must be qualified in their respective disciplines.
How to apply as a group: Each group member must create an account on the application site, complete a separate application, and submit it. Select Group when asked Individual or Group on the General Information page of the application, then list the names of every group member—including yourself—in the boxes that are accessible.
A CV and writing sample should be submitted individually by each group member. The project proposal for your group should be uploaded as a single document, with a unique statement outlining the nature of your collaboration.
The fellowship encourages applicants in a group to request letters of recommendation from various people. If a recommender has worked closely with all group members or is qualified to speak to the proposed project as a whole for your group, they can be included as a recommender for all group members and may upload the same letter.
