About the University of Melbourne and Scholarship

The University of Melbourne is a public research institution in Melbourne, Australia. It was established in 1853 and is Australia’s second oldest university as well as Victoria’s oldest. Its main campus is in Parkville, an inner neighborhood north of Melbourne’s central business area, and it has numerous satellite campuses around Victoria.

The University of Melbourne, founded in the 19th century by the colony of Victoria, is one of Australia’s six sandstone universities and a member of the Group of Eight, Universitas 21, Washington University’s McDonnell International Scholars Academy, and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities. Since 1872, several residential colleges have been established linked with the university, providing housing for students and teachers as well as academic, athletic, and cultural events.

The university is divided into ten distinct academic divisions and collaborates with several research organizations, including the Grattan Institute, the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research, the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research. Among the university’s fifteen graduate schools are the Melbourne Business School, Melbourne School of Law, Melbourne School of Veterinary Medicine, and Melbourne School of Medicine.

Four Australian prime ministers and five governors-general were graduates of the University of Melbourne. With eight, the University of Melbourne has had the most Nobel Laureates teach, research, and study there of any Australian university. The University of Melbourne was placed 14th (first nationally) in the QS World University Rankings 2024. Times Higher Education rated Melbourne 33rd internationally (1st in Australia) in its annual World University Rankings for 2021-2022. SCImago Institutions Rankings placed it 33rd among universities worldwide in 2022. Melbourne was placed 29th in the world (1st domestically) in the most current CWTS Leiden Ranking. The institution was placed 33rd internationally (1st in Australia) in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) league table published in 2021.

The QS World University Subject Rankings 2020 rank the University of Melbourne in positions 10 for law, 12 for education, 16 for accounting and finance, 17 for social policy and administration, 19 for sociology, 22 for environmental studies, and 23 for linguistics. Despite having a high academic standing, the University of Melbourne performs poorly when it comes to student satisfaction. In 2021, the university had the lowest overall satisfaction rating of any Australian university, at 63.1, which was lower than the national average of 73.

A Master in Physics is eligible for the Jean Laby Medal Scholarship. Applying for this scholarship is possible. Based on academic achievement, this grant is given to a Master of Science (Physics) graduate student.

Jean Laby Medal Scholarship – Eligibility Criteria

Candidates are advised to meet the following requirements to be qualified for the Jean Laby Medal Scholarship at the University of Melbourne:

  • possess a Master of Science in Science (Physics) from the University of Melbourne,
  • possess a minimum 85% course weighted average mark.

Note: Academic excellence is measured by the weighted average score for the course.
